A standby generator is the difference between hosting Thanksgiving in a warm house when the ice storm knocks out power for three days, and hosting it in a cold dark one. The Upstate gets two or three power events most winters that last long enough to matter — and a standby generator is one of the few home upgrades you only really appreciate after the fact.
The most common install is a Generac 22kW air-cooled unit with a 200A automatic transfer switch, running on natural gas. That covers a typical 2,000–3,500 sq ft home — HVAC, refrigerator, well pump, lights, and outlets — without managing what's on or off.
Smaller homes or budget-conscious owners can do a manual interlock kit instead. The interlock is a sliding bracket on the panel that lets you safely backfeed a portable generator through a 30A or 50A inlet. You manage which circuits to turn on, but the cost is roughly a quarter of a full standby setup.
We coordinate the gas line work with a licensed plumber (or your existing one), pull the electrical permit, do the load calculation, install the transfer switch and generator pad, and schedule the inspection. After install, we run the unit through its first weekly self-test and walk you through the alerts.
From signed estimate to running unit, typically 4–6 weeks. The unit itself ships in 2–3 weeks, gas line coordination adds a few days, and the actual electrical install is 1 day plus inspection.
Both work. Natural gas is cheaper long-term if your home already has a gas line. Propane works for rural properties and requires a 250–500 gallon tank. We can discuss tradeoffs during the site visit.
Generac 22kW with 200A ATS, professionally installed, typically runs $10,000–$13,500 depending on gas line distance and panel work needed. Smaller 14–18kW units start around $7,500. Manual interlock setups are $1,500–$2,500.
